Please register here. \nDiscover the secrets of hawk migration. \nJoseph Zbyrowski is a raptor specialist with more than 30 years of experience working with hawks and owls. A retired environmental science teacher\, he is a master bird bander\, former raptor rehabilitator\, and has done volunteer work with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RI DEM)\, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service\, the National Park Service\, and the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. For the past three decades\, Joseph has specialized in identifying and counting migrating hawks. He conducts the annual hawk migration count in Rhode Island and is actively involved in Peregrine Falcon and Barn Owl restoration projects. \nIn this Voices of the Land lecture\, Joseph will present the findings from a multi-year survey of hawk migration at Napatree Point\, Rhode Island’s premier hawk watch site. Each year\, annual hawk watch counts are conducted at more than 275 locations across the United States. These counts provide exceptional opportunities to observe migrating raptors while also generating valuable scientific data used in research\, wildlife management\, and conservation efforts.

Aquidneck Island Land Trust’s former Board Chair and Salve Regina professor Jim Chace will lead this free tour and bird banding demonstration. Meet at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday\, September 26\, at the Middletown Police Station (123 Valley Road\, Middletown) and we will walk over together to the mobile bird banding station and see what Jim catches! \nParking is limited so please carpool if possible. Bailey Brook is a primary source of drinking water for Middletown and Newport residents\, and serves as habitat for several migratory bird species. The Land Trust partnered with the Town of Middletown to preserve the parcel of land buffering Bailey Brook. \nRain date: Sunday\, September 27 at 8 a.m.

Located across from Tom’s Market on Main Rd\, the 48.8 acres go all the way down to Mount Hope Bay\, with 1\,350ft of pristine shoreline. \nJust imagine hiking through luscious green forest trails and suddenly seeing sparkling water through the branches\, then feeling the ocean breeze as you emerge onto the shore and look directly across to Mount Hope. This can become a reality\, but we need everyone’s support! \nThere are currently zero acres of conserved public green space in Tiverton north of Route 24.
