Explore this 265-acre property\, which today is a sustainable working farm. \nDuring open hours\, take a self-guided walking tour on up to 2.5 miles of easy to moderate trails\, participate in an outdoor workshop\, explore farm fields with grazing livestock\, stroll along the shore\, and view seasonal farm activities. The farmers grow hay and sell livestock to other farms\, and produce wool products available at our farm. The 1796 house\, still used as the farmers’ residence\, may be viewed from the exterior only.

The property was part of the Briggs family’s original land and remained in agricultural use for centuries before being acquired by the Town of East Greenwich in 2001 to preserve its historic character\, farmland\, and natural landscape. \nToday\, the property serves as an important piece of East Greenwich’s greenway system\, with publicly accessible trails through its fields and forests\, while portions of the land continue to support working agriculture and educational programming.

Sign up here. \nRocky Ruins Hike\nHarrington Preserve (North Side)\nWest Greenwich\, RI\nFriday\, September 11 at 9am \nHarrington Preserve | The Nature Conservancy \nJoin The Nature Conservancy in exploring the new Harrington Preserve\, which opened to hiking last year. Only accessible through the Big River Management Area\, this forested preserve features boulders\, fascinating stone walls and cairns\, plus a beaver pond and a historic cemetery. \nFor this 3.6-mile hike\, please be prepared to walk over an uneven trail surface; sturdy hiking shoes are recommended. The trail is considered moderate due to the length and varied terrain\, with one steep hill and a steady\, slow incline on the return to the parking area. \nMeet in the Big River Management Area parking lot at approximately 500 Hopkins Hill Road in West Greenwich. \nLimited to 12 participants.

DESCRIPTION:Please join the Cumberland Land Trust for a 2.5 mile Land Trust Days Labor Day Hike at the Catamint Brook Preserve\, our newest preserve. \nThe hike is rated as moderate+ because of hilly terrain. \nHikers will experience beautiful woodlands\, historic stone walls\, stream crossings and a walk back into colonial history\, as the preserve is very much connected back to the revolutionary war. The preserve is located in a Cumberland Historic District and if you look closely as you drive on Tower Hill Road\, you will see buildings dated to the 1700’s. \nFor your reference\, John Kostrzewa highlighted the preserve in his Providence Journal “Walking Rhode Island” column at https://www.providencejournal.com/story/sports/outdoors/2024/01/05/rhode-island-newest-hiking-trail-catamint-brook-preserve-cumberland-colonial-ruins-spooky-lore/72063644007/ \nYoung hikers are invited to join us on the guided hike. Though leashed dogs are usually allowed on our trails\, in respect to the other hikers\, dogs are not allowed on the Labor Day hike. \nBecause of some rocky terrain along the trails\, It is advised that hikers wear sturdy footwear. Hikers should also protect themselves from insects and carry drinking water. \nThe hike will start from the Catamint Brook Preserve trailhead on Monday\, September 7 (Labor Day) at 10:00 am. \nTrail maps can be downloaded from cumberlandlandtrust.org.

Discover the fascinating connections between the Bay\, Rhode Island’s coastal ecosystems\, surrounding watershed\, and the Napatree Point Conservation Area. \nAlong the way\, we’ll uncover the vital role Little Narragansett Bay plays in supporting marine life and explore how water\, wildlife\, and habitats are all connected. You’ll learn about the species that call these waters home and the importance of protecting this coastal ecosystem. \nThe walk will include a seine net pull\, where our staff will carefully collect marine life from the bay using a 20-foot seine net for an up-close experience. \nOpen to all ages. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. \nThis program is designed to last 90 minutes so participants can use the free parking along Bay Street. \nThis program will start at 9:00 AM and meet at The Napatree Point Conservation Area entrance. \nRegistration is required. \nLight rain will not cancel these events\, but a downpour will.
