SUMMARY:Combining Art & Science to Save Species
DESCRIPTION:This event is posted on behalf of the Barrington Land Conservation Trust & Barrington Public Library. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Please register here. \nWildlife populations are declining around the world because of human impacts\, and yet too few of us are part of the solution. In this presentation\, Dr. Lucy Spelman\, founder of the local organization Creature Conserve\, offers a behind-the-scenes look at how combining art and science can bring us together to save species. \nThe event will take place on Tuesday\, Oct. 20\, at 7 pm in the Salem Family Auditorium at the Barrington Public Library\, our partner in the Learning Series. \n“Dr. Lucy” believes that we need a more inviting and inclusive approach to wildlife conservation\, one that open to diverse perspectives from the arts\, humanities\, sciences\, traditional ecological knowledge and beyond. \nDrawing from her years as a zoo and wildlife veterinarian\, she describes some of her first experiences with art-sci collaboration. These stories are wild and wonderful\, from glue-on shoes for a rhino to parading for pandas. \nShe’ll introduce us to the work of Creature Conserve\, the non-profit she founded\, and her newest book\, Creature Needs\, which will be available for sale. You’ll see examples of art informed and inspired by science that call attention to the loss of biodiversity and what we can do about it.

SUMMARY:Fall Trail Clearing & Building with East Greenwich Land Trust
DESCRIPTION:This event is posted on behalf of the East Greenwich Land Trust. REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED. Please register here. \n\n\nThe Land Trust has been working on an exciting project for our community: a ~2-mile trail system on the 120-acre parcel donated to the Town of East Greenwich by Mary Clark in 2020. We are in the process of preparing new trails on the parcel that will be open to the public. \nImportant Note on Event Scope & Safety: Keep in mind that this trail system is currently in development: the trails are unmarked\, uneven\, and not handicap-accessible. This event will be an active workday focused on trail clearing and prep work\, and is not suitable for pets\, young children\, the elderly or those with mobility challenges. \nThis community trail-building event will start with a group hike of the main loop trail we cleared this summer. We’ll then begin clearing a new spur loop off the southwestern section of the main loop. The new spur loop has already been flagged\, and Land Trust members will be on-site to provide instruction and oversee the work. \nEvent Details\nProgram Timing \n\n\nThe program will begin promptly at 10:00 AM and is expected to run approximately 3-4 hours. \n\n\nThe first ~30 minutes will include a group hike & tour of the main loop trail (already cleared). \n\n\nThe remaining time will be devoted to clearing the new spur loop in the southwestern section of the trail system. \n\n\nAttendees are welcome to depart after the group hike or stay for as much trail-clearing as they have time. \n\n\nPlan to arrive a few minutes early to gather at the meeting point and prepare to carry your gear. \n\n\nLate arrivals: although we plan to flag the path from the parking area to our worksite\, late arrivals are responsible for navigating themselves to it. Keep in mind that the trails are not blazed and can be somewhat obscured by leaves. \n\n\nRain date: This event is rain or shine\, no rain date. \nParking and Arrival \n\n\nThe meet-up point will be at ~725 Tillinghast Rd\, East Greenwich — due south from the New England Wireless & Steam Museum. There is a gap in the stone wall on the west side of the road that is wide enough for vehicles to enter. Here is a link to the exact location. \n\n\nPull through the gap in the stone wall on Tillinghast Road where trustees or town staff will greet you and guide parking in the field. The main trailhead for the new trail system will eventually be placed beyond that wall\, once a formal parking area is established there. \n\n\n \nWhat to Bring & Wear\n\n\nFootwear: Sturdy\, closed-toe\, thick-soled hiking boots or trail shoes (the ground is uneven and unpaved). \n\n\nClothing: Long pants and tall socks (recommended for brush and tick prevention). \n\n\nSafety gear: Durable work/gardening gloves. \n\n\nHydration & Fuel: Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated\, and pack a snack/lunch if you plan to stay and work the whole time. \n\n\nTools (Optional): We will have a limited supply of equipment available for use. You may wish to bring your own rakes\, loppers\, garden shears\, hand pruners\, or folding saws for your personal use\, labeled with your name. Bring only what you can comfortably carry to the worksite in one trip. \n\n\nContact \nEmail eglandtrust@gmail.com with any questions prior to the event. Registrants will be provided with contact information of Land Trust personnel for day-of coordination. \nCheck “Friends of the East Greenwich Land Trust” Facebook page for updates
