Join the Council and the Coventry Land Trust on Friday, August 23rd at the Tutsch and Merrill S. Whipple Conservation Area to kickoff Land Trust Days 2024!
The event will feature a short speaking program, commencing at 2:00pm, celebrating the work of the Coventry Land Trust. The hike will begin at 2:15pm and will take visitors over the boardwalk, through the swamp, and along the border of Whipple. The hike will pass by the Pawtuxet, cross streams that lead into the river, and spend time in an upland forest of pine trees and other hardwoods. It will then pass by the meadow and along the swamp to return to the parking area.
Tutsch and Merrill S. Whipple Conservation Area is the first property acquired by the Coventry Land Trust during the early 2000s. It is over 50 acres of wetlands and pine forest, including a red maple swamp, vernal pools, a grassy meadow, and swaths of pine trees. A boardwalk goes through the swamp from the western entrance of Whipple. Beyond this, trails are average hiking trails, with some rooty areas, small bridges over streams, and pine needle covered ground.
Parking is available at the conservation area at the Sandy Bottom Road entrance.
